Police and protesters went home bruised on Thursday night after hours of intense demonstrations on the streets of Hamburg, Germany, as the G20 summit got underway.

Cars were set on fire and police used water canon on masked demonstrators in a violent beginning to the international body’s first meeting since Donald Trump became US President.

The precise number of protesters who turned out was unclear, but police were preparing to deal with as many as 100,000. At least 75 police officers were hurt throughout the evening. The number of injured protesters is unknown.

Below are some of the most dramatic photos from a night of unrest in Germany.
